Introduction

Livestock ear tags are essential tools for identifying and managing livestock. Worn on the animal's ear, they record critical data such as individual identification numbers, breed, date of birth, and vaccination information, serving as the foundation for precise livestock management and product traceability. Ear tag pliers are specialized instruments used to attach ear tags to livestock ears; their quality and proper usage directly affect the effectiveness of tag application and the animal's health. Standardized use of ear tags and pliers, along with effective tag management, is of great significance for improving farming management levels, ensuring food safety, and preventing and controlling animal diseases. This article provides a detailed introduction to the types, usage standards, and management methods of livestock ear tags and ear tag pliers, helping farmers use ear tag equipment scientifically.

I. Types and Characteristics of Livestock Ear Tags

1. Classification by Material: There are mainly two types: plastic ear tags and metal ear tags. Plastic ear tags are made of TPU or polyurethane, featuring lightweight design, a wide range of colors, the ability to print text and QR codes, and low cost, making them the most commonly used type today. Metal ear tags are made of aluminum or stainless steel, offering durability and resistance to damage, but they are heavier, prone to rust, and have limited information capacity, so they are less commonly used at present.

2. Classification by Function:

- Standard ear tag: Printed with only a number, used for basic individual identification, low in price, and widely used.

- QR code ear tag: Printed with a QR code, scanning it allows access to detailed information about the livestock, facilitating information-based management and traceability.

- RFID electronic ear tags: Built-in electronic chips that allow wireless reading of information, with large storage capacity to record complete information on epidemic prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and feeding. Suitable for large-scale farms and traceability management, but relatively expensive.

- Epidemic prevention ear tag: Uniformly issued by the animal epidemic prevention department, printed with an epidemic prevention number, used to prove that the livestock has been vaccinated, and serves as a mark of mandatory immunization.

3. Classification by applicable animal: The size and thickness of ears vary among different animals, and so do the sizes of ear tags. There are different models for cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits, and so on. When purchasing, you should choose the ear tag size corresponding to the animal being raised. If the size is too large, it is prone to falling off; if it is too small, it will press on the ear and affect blood circulation.

II. Types and Selection of Ear Tag Pliers

1. Type: Ear tag pliers are mainly divided into two types: standard and automatic. Standard ear tag pliers have a simple structure, requiring manual pressing to fasten the male and female parts of the ear tag; they are low in price and widely used. Automatic ear tag pliers are equipped with automatic rebound and positioning mechanisms, making them easier to operate and more accurate in application, though slightly more expensive. There are also specialized electronic ear tag pliers, suitable for applying RFID electronic ear tags.

2. Key Selection Points:

- Material: The high-quality ear tag pliers are made of premium steel, featuring high strength, resistance to deformation, and long-lasting durability. The handles are wrapped with anti-slip rubber for a comfortable grip.

- Accurate positioning: The ear tag pliers should have a precise positioning mechanism to ensure proper alignment of the male and female ear tags, preventing misalignment during application. The positioning pin should be sturdy and wear-resistant, and not easily bent.

- Effortless operation: The lever is rationally designed, requiring minimal force to press, so your hand won't get tired even after prolonged use. The automatic rebound type is even more convenient to operate.

- Compatibility: Select ear tag pliers that match the ear tags being used; different brands and models of ear tags may require specific pliers.

- Easy to clean and disinfect: The simple structure allows for easy disassembly, cleaning, and disinfection, preventing cross-infection.

III. Ear Tag Wearing Standards

1. Timing of Application: Ear tags should be applied promptly after the livestock is born, typically within 3 to 7 days after birth. At this stage, the ears are relatively thin, making application easier and promoting faster wound healing. Avoid applying ear tags when the livestock is ill, under stress, or during hot weather, as this may exacerbate the stress response.

2. Placement: The ear tag should be placed in the middle of the ear, avoiding the ear margin and the base of the ear. The specific location is in the lower-middle part of the inner ear, in an area free of large blood vessels. If placed too high, the tag is prone to falling off; if placed too low, it may be bitten by other livestock; if placed near the base of the ear, it may interfere with ear movement. The placement on the left and right ears should be consistent to facilitate identification and management.

3. Preparation Before Wearing:

- Inspect the ear tag: Before application, check that the ear tag is intact, that the male and female connectors are properly matched, and that the printed number is clear and correct. Replace any damaged or illegible tags promptly.

- Disinfection: Ear tags and taggers should be thoroughly disinfected before use, either by soaking or wiping with 75% alcohol or a 0.1% chlorhexidine solution. The tagger should be disinfected again after each animal is tagged to prevent cross-infection.

- Restraint of livestock: When applying, the livestock should be properly restrained to prevent movement that could cause misalignment of the application site or tearing of the ear. A restraint frame, restraint rope, or assistance from a handler can be used for restraint.

- Ear cleaning: Before wearing, wipe the ear area where the device will be worn with a sterile cotton ball to remove dirt and keep it clean.

4. How to Wear:

1. Attach the male part of the ear tag (the side with the pin) to one side of the ear tag pliers, and the female part (the side with the hole) to the other side, ensuring they are securely and properly aligned.

2. Hold the ear of the livestock with one hand, find the wearing position, place the ear between the male and female buckles of the ear tag pliers, and align the position.

3. Hold the handle of the ear tag pliers with the other hand, and quickly and firmly press the handle to drive the stud of the male part through the ear, securely engaging it with the female part.

4. After pressing it into place, release the handle, remove the ear tag pliers, and check whether the ear tag is securely attached, correctly positioned, and whether the male and female connectors are fully engaged.

5. Wipe the wound at the wearing site with a sterile cotton ball, apply iodine tincture or other disinfectant to prevent infection.

5. Precautions:

- When wearing, move quickly, accurately, and steadily. Press once to the correct position; do not press repeatedly to avoid ear injury.

- Do not wear it too tightly, as this may compress the ear and affect blood circulation, leading to ear swelling or necrosis; do not wear it too loosely either, as the ear tag may swing and fall off.

- After wearing, observe the livestock's reaction. If any abnormal conditions such as severe ear swelling, bleeding, or pus are found, take prompt action.

- Do not arbitrarily replace or remove ear tags after they have been applied. If replacement is necessary, proper records must be kept.

IV. Ear Tag Information Management

1. Numbering Rules: Ear tag numbers should be standardized to facilitate identification and management. Typically, the number includes information such as the farm code, year, livestock breed, and individual serial number. For example, farm code + year + breed code + serial number. The number must be unique and non-duplicative. For QR code or RFID ear tags, it is essential to ensure that the number is consistent with the information in the system.

2. Information Recording: After the ear tag is applied, relevant information about the livestock should be recorded promptly, including the ear tag number, breed, sex, date of birth, parent numbers, date of application, and the person who applied it. Subsequent information such as disease prevention (vaccine type, vaccination date, vaccinator), diagnosis and treatment (disease, medication, treatment outcome), reproduction (mating, parturition), growth (body weight, feed consumption), and sale (sale date, destination) should all be recorded in association with the ear tag number to establish a complete individual profile.

3. Informatization Management: Farms with the necessary conditions should use aquaculture management software or systems to enter ear tag information, achieving electronic management. For farms using QR code ear tags, information can be quickly queried and entered by scanning the QR code with a mobile phone; for farms using RFID electronic ear tags, information can be read in bulk using a reader, thereby improving management efficiency. Informatization management facilitates data statistical analysis, traceability queries, and disease prevention and control.

4. Record Retention: Records and archives related to ear tags shall be properly preserved for a period of no less than two years after the sale of the livestock. Paper archives should be stored by category and protected from moisture and fire; electronic archives should be backed up regularly to prevent data loss. Archives must be authentic, complete, and traceable, and shall not be tampered with arbitrarily.

V. Daily Inspection and Maintenance of Ear Tags

1. Regular Inspection: After applying the ear tag, it should be inspected regularly, generally once a week. The inspection should include: whether the ear tag is secure, whether it has come off, whether it is damaged, whether the number is clear, whether there is any infection at the wearing site, and whether the ear is swollen or necrotic. Any issues found should be addressed promptly.

2. Handling of Detached Ear Tags: If an ear tag is found to be detached, the detached tag should be promptly located. Once found, inspect it for integrity. If it is intact, it can be reattached; if damaged, replace it with a new ear tag. When reattaching, use a new ear tag or a disinfected one, and the attachment position may be slightly adjusted to avoid the original wound. At the same time, make a record and update the ear tag number information.

3. Damage Handling: If the ear tag is cracked, deformed, or the number is illegible, it should be replaced with a new one promptly. When replacing, record the correspondence between the old and new ear tag numbers to ensure continuous and traceable information.

4. Infection Management: If signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or pus appear at the site of wear, prompt treatment is required. Clean the wound with saline solution and apply iodine tincture or antibiotic ointment; in severe cases, administer antibiotic injections. If the ear tag is too tight and causes infection due to pressure, it should be loosened appropriately or repositioned. In cases of severe infection leading to ear necrosis, the ear tag should be removed promptly and the ear treated.

5. Ear Tagging Pliers Maintenance: Ear tagging pliers should be cleaned promptly after use to remove residual tissue and dirt, then disinfected and stored. Regularly inspect the condition of the ear tagging pliers; straighten or replace bent positioning pins, replace fatigued springs, and tighten loose jaws. Store the ear tagging pliers in a dry, clean place to prevent rust. Keep a spare pair of ear tagging pliers on hand for use in case of malfunction.

VI. Requirements of Relevant Regulations

In accordance with the "Animal Epidemic Prevention Law of the People's Republic of China," the "Measures for the Administration of Livestock and Poultry Identification and Breeding Records," and other relevant regulations, the state implements a mandatory ear tag system for livestock such as pigs, cattle, and sheep. Breeding farms must affix livestock and poultry identification tags within the prescribed period after the birth of the animals and establish breeding records. Livestock and poultry identification tags must not be reused, and no entity or individual may sell, purchase, transport, or slaughter livestock and poultry that are required to be identified but are not. Violations of these regulations will be subject to penalties. Breeders must strictly comply with the relevant regulations, properly affix and use ear tags, maintain complete breeding records, and cooperate with the supervision and inspection of animal epidemic prevention departments.

Summary

Cattle ear tags and tag applicators are essential tools in livestock farming management. Standardized use and management are of great significance for improving farming management levels, ensuring food safety, and preventing and controlling animal diseases. Farmers should select ear tags of appropriate types and sizes based on the livestock being raised, and choose tag applicators that are reliable in quality, labor-saving in operation, and accurate in positioning. During application, strict adherence to standards is required, including selecting appropriate timing and locations, performing disinfection and restraint, and mastering the correct application method to ensure secure and accurate placement. After application, livestock information should be recorded promptly, complete individual records established, and information-based management implemented where conditions permit. The condition of ear tags should be inspected regularly, and issues such as detachment, damage, or infection addressed promptly, while proper cleaning and maintenance of tag applicators should be carried out. At the same time, relevant regulatory requirements must be strictly observed to standardize the application and use of ear tags. Only by managing every aspect of ear tag use and maintenance can the identification and management functions of ear tags be fully realized, enabling refined livestock management and product traceability, thereby improving farming efficiency and food safety standards.
